Mezzo- Soprano

Nina van Essen is for season 2019-2020 part of the Hannover Staatsoper. In 2018 she graduated cum laude from the Dutch National Opera Academy  and recently received the Audience prize and Annett Andriessen concert prize at the International Vocalist Competition of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Her repertoire consists of opera, contemporary, oratorio and lied by various composers.

Nina van Essen (1994), will be part of the Staatsoper Hannovers ensemble from summer 2019 onwards. Some roles she will be performing soon are; Hänsel from Hänsel und Gretel by E.Humperdinck, Rosina from Barbiere di Siviglia by G.Rossini and Zweite Dame from Mozarts classic Die Zauberflöte. Nina graduated cum laude from the Dutch National Opera Academy in August 2018. During this program Nina was taught by Sasja Hunnego and she received a scholarship from the Miluška Duffková foundation. In the context of an Erasmus Exchange she studied in France, Lyon at the C.N.S.M.D (2014-2015), where she worked with singing teachers Isabelle Germain and Francoise Pollet. Before Nina began her Bachelor studies at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where she graduated with distinction magna cum laude, she followed a Young Talent program at the school for Young Talent also in The Hague. During this period Nina’s vocal teachers where Rita Dams and Sasja Hunnego.

Highlights of her engagements include the collaborations with Serie Grote Zangers (pre-program), The ASKO Schönberg Ensemble (conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw), Saturday Matinee Concertgebouw (conducted by Mark Elders) The Grachtenfestival, Krashna Musica (conducted by Ruben de Grauw), The SKA (conducted by Servaas Schreuders), Kamerbreed Klassiek, Hortus Musicalis, Nouvel Opéra de Fribourg (”Masha ‘from Moscow Cheryomushki by Dmitri Shostakovich conducted by Jérome Kuhn and “Gwendolyn Fairfax” from The Importance of Being Earnest by Garold Barry) The Dutch Opera (Manon Lescaut, Madrigalist 2017 under Alexander Joel)

Her extensive concert repertoire includes Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Mozart’s Mass in C minor, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, and orchestral song cycles such as Les nuits d’été de Berlioz and Ravel’s Trois poèmes de Stephane Mallarmé.

With the DNOA Nina performed ”Hänsel” from Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck conducted by Antony Hermus and the NJO, “Lucretia” from The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten (conducted by Karel Deseure), “Mercedes” from Carmen on the Bredeweg festival and “Dorabella” from cosi fan tutte by WA Mozart (conducted by Bas Wiegers)

Masterclasses Nina followed from, among others, Meinard Kraak, Alain Garichot, Angelika Kirchschlager, Nadine Secunde, Neil Semer, Claron McFadden, Ira Siff, Anna Bonitatibus and Pietro Spagnoli. Nina also likes to work with pianist Harimada Kusuma on liedrepertoire, with whom she recorded her first cd in 2013, called ” Maintenant Ici ”.

In the International Vocalist competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch Nina recently won the audience prize, the Annett Andriessen concert prize (concert in Ningbo/China) and two engagements amongst others with the Residentie Orchestra. Nina was also one of the finalist in de Otto Edelmann Competition in Vienna, Austria in February 2019.

Since 2017, Nina is represented by Artista International, Franziska Hunke and mainly works with vocal teacher Neil Semer.



Special credits go to Nina van Essen for her performance of Madame de la Haltière.Nina showed all-round qualities in acting, singing and stage presence. Lovely to see the most unpleasant character steal the show.
